Devialet announce Sky Soundbox- Author:
We are delighted to share some very exciting news. This morning Devialet announced their first ever licensing partnership, with Sky, Europe's leading TV entertainment company based here in the UK.
Devialet and Sky have collaborated to create the Sky Soundbox, a new all-in-one sound system for TVs.
It will retail for £799 to non-Sky subscribers, will cost just £249 for current and new Sky Q multiscreen customers, and £299 for all other Sky TV or Sky Broadband and Talk customers. It goes on sale in the autumn. Devialet, who initially approached Sky a year ago with a prototype TV sound system that they had spent a year developing, are supplying the internal technology and digital signal processing trickery for the Soundbox, while Sky has taken charge of the industrial design and manufacture, which will be in China.
The Soundbox combines six 3-inch woofers and three 2-inch full-range speakers into a single compact unit that can deliver 140W of sound with Devialet’s trademark range including thunderous bass, going from 35Hz to 22kHz. The Soundbox uses walls to bounce ambient sound around the room. The result is spatial surround sound usually expected from a full home-cinema system but without the need for a separate subwoofer or extra front or rear speakers.
The Sky Soundbox has dynamic volume management, analysing incoming audio in real time, and adjusting volume levels from quiet dialogue to explosive action. Users will also be able to select a number of manual modes, including Dialogue Enhance mode where “speech is clear and defined”; Late Night mode, with decreasing bass and further enhancements such as raising whispered speech; and Kids mode, where parents can set maximum volume levels. Plus seamless compatibility for all videos and music, with a wide range of connectivity options, including HDMI and optical inputs, and Bluetooth for music.
Sky's 12 million UK customers only get half the experience from their viewing because of the poor sound quality of TVs since the rise of flat screens. Sky shared Devialet's vision that great entertainment can only be achieved with great sound. Working closely together Devialet has created a new audio journey for Sky customers and integrated sound directly into Sky's products.
Most of Sky's customers may be happy with just the Soundbox, some may be so excited that they will want to buy a Phantom, but most importantly, all will get a sense of the unique sound experience that Devialet can offer and will want to know more about the company and it's products. This partnership will enable Devialet to reach millions of customers and make sure that everyone knows what the Devialet brand stands for.
Devialet, which secured €100M funding from the likes of Foxconn, Jay Z’s Roc Nation and Andy Rubin’s Playground Global last November, has created exclusive sound modes for those watching with a Sky Q box. This “Sky Q Sound” uses metadata provided by the box allowing the Soundbox to automatically adapts sound settings on the fly to the content being played.
Quentin Sannié, Devialet CEO, explained:
“We basically analysed the sound spectrum of certain types of contents – such as cinema, boxing, golf, cricket, Formula 1 – and created tailored soundscapes for each of them, to deliver a unique level of sound precision. So, when you're switching from a movie to a cricket game, the sound automatically optimises itself to provide the best experience. TV displays are wonderful but the sound is ugly. When we met with Sky a year ago, we talked about this common problem and desire to fix this. Putting a 5.1 system with a sub in a living room is more of a problem than a solution. We had to find a solution that was good-looking, easy to integrate into your home and deliver a big change for the consumer when experiencing content. The experience should be better than anything else on the market. What we are licensing is not really a technology, although this is packed with it, we are licensing a real Devialet experience at the best possible price. It’s a wonderful opportunity.”
Indeed it is. In one stroke Devialet will have access to the broadcaster’s 12.7m subscribers in the UK, where the Soundbox will, initially at least, be exclusively available – massively raising the profile of the Devialet brand.
